After 25 years, the homeowners decided to transform their landscape into their dream space. Despite tough summer conditions, the team delivered quality work, and the project’s success came down to good communication, trust, and thoughtful planning.
What inspired this 25-year landscape project?
Well, we bought this home 25 years ago. We were both working and we just put in the basics and haven't really touched it for 25 years. Decided, this is the last place we're going to live, and we want it just the way we want it. And we interviewed several people to do the work around our house, and Malcolm got the job for me.
How did you approach the design and plant selection?
It was more of the art of it. This house was brick and we changed it to this cream color. We did all of that on the outside first. So it's a little more modern and relevant. And, we got perennials, because we know that we're not going to be doing annuals that often every year. And, the guys had to do this in 99 degree weather, which was incredible.
What challenges did you face during the renovation?
It was not easy. They never complained. They were respectful. They just didn't stop working. I was shocked and, they did a really nice job for us. There's nothing we'd want to change.
How did the team perform throughout the project?
Only a couple plants didn't survive the heat, really. So the choices were pretty good. The plants got rooted pretty fast so that they could get down to the water table or wherever those roots needed to go. We had to water a lot the first two weeks in the summer. Most people don't want to plant in the summer, but anyone going into this job, especially in summer months, have to give their time afterwards, because the roots really need help going down far enough so it's not impacted by hot, dry weather.
Why is the client-contractor relationship important?
So it really came down to, the relationship that we built at the front end and who really listened actually to is a big one as to what we wanted. And gave us good suggestions to steer us away from bad choices.
What advice do you have for similar projects?
So, it's a serious project. It takes some time, and it's important to allocate time when you're doing it. Meaning the time it takes to prepare it. We have to be home to oversee it or trust somebody that's going to.
“A landscape project this meaningful takes patience, trust, and a team that truly listens. The result is a home that finally feels like ours.”
