This article covers the transformation of a worn patio into a year-round outdoor oasis, highlighting project communication, design adjustments, and favorite features like a cedar pavilion and built-in grill.
How did the team manage communication and project delivery?
Jake: Larger projects usually involve a lot of communication, design adjustments, and client feedback. How did our team manage communication and project delivery throughout the build?
Malcolm: Our designer created the original plans, but sometimes what looks good on paper needs slight adjustments once construction begins. We worked closely with the client to refine certain design details as the project progressed. Once everything was finalized and installed, the space came together really well.
What steps ensured client satisfaction and project completion?
Jake: That leads perfectly into the final results. Was the client satisfied, and what did it take to get the project fully completed?
Malcolm: Because it was such a large project, construction extended slightly into winter, especially after we added a few extra features. Some finishing elements — like irrigation and plantings — had to be postponed until spring to ensure they were installed properly. Once everything was completed, the client was extremely happy with the results. We didn’t experience any issues, and the project wrapped up successfully. We actually still maintain the property with mowing, mulching, and fertilizing services, so we get to see the space regularly, which is really rewarding.
What is the standout feature of the new outdoor space?
Jake: What’s your personal favorite feature of the project?
Malcolm: My favorite feature is definitely the cedar pavilion with the fireplace. It’s a unique structure with large eight-by-eight cedar posts and a high, open ceiling. It includes a large gas fireplace, ceiling fans, a chandelier, and even a heater, so the space can be used year-round. It’s not something you see very often, and it turned out beautifully.
Which feature does the client enjoy most?
Jake: Is that the client’s favorite area as well?
Malcolm: While the pavilion is a standout feature, the client’s favorite addition is actually the built-in Somerset grill. It’s connected directly to a gas line, so he can simply walk outside and turn it on without dealing with propane tanks. He tells us all the time how much he uses it, and it’s become one of the most functional parts of his outdoor space.
“Transforming a worn patio into a year-round outdoor oasis takes teamwork, attention to detail, and a focus on what matters most to the client.”
